FIFA confirm contribution towards new football centre
Thursday, October 22, 2009
The ceremony was held at the current FFC headquarters, located in Chaeng Maeng village on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. In attendance were representatives from Khmer Nihon Corporation, the company chosen to construct the new centre.
With the signing of the contract, FIFA have granted the FFC US$400,992, which is the second contribution from the international football organisation as part of their Goal Project to develop Cambodian football. The FFC received US$400,000 from FIFA in 2002 for the construction of the current centre.
Jeysing Muthiah confirmed that the project will see the construction of a new National Football Centre (NFC) on 15 hectares of land located in Tonle Bati district, Takeo province, about 40 kilometers from Phnom Penh.
Ouk Sethycheat expressed the ambitions of federation president Sao Sokha for the development of football in Cambodia. “Our current centre is too small and surrounded by many garment factories,” said the secretary. “That is not good for the players. So the president has decided to find a new place.”
He added that the construction of the new NFC is to include two playing fields and accommodation, changing rooms and a canteen for national team players.
According to Sao Sokha, the FFC is planning to spend around $2 million for the construction of the new NFC. Besides sponsorship from the second FIFA Goal Project, the federation has raised funds from donations by local companies and from the sale of the old NFC land.
“We will spend from five to 10 years for the construction of new NFC, depending on the money we have,” said Ouk Sethycheat.

Chhoy Vira stuck in stalemate
Thursday, October 15, 2009
CHHOY Vira became a legend amongst his peers in the world of Cambodian chess when he won the first-ever National Championships last year. For his efforts, the 30-year-old received a gold medal, and a cash prize of US$1,000.
Since then, Chhoy Vira has struggled to find local opponents who can challenge him and dreams of playing in regional and world tournaments. “This is not me being boastful, but I really want to play against real opponents,” he said. “Especially with chess players from ASEAN nations because I cannot step up to the world level directly.”
The champ is a regular at Rong Roeung Sea Lareach coffee shop near Tuol Kork market, a popular haunt for local chess masters. But in recent years, Chhoy Vira has played there infrequently, preferring to eat and drink and watch other people playing, rather than rattle off a succession of easy victories.
Chhoy Vira cannot find worthy opponents in non-human form either. “Chess computers were created by man,” he remarks. “They can calculate the next seven steps. But me, I can know what happens in the next eight steps.”
Cambodian chess, or ouk chaktrung, is similar to Western chess, with slight variants in rules and starting setup. The game dates back to the early Angkorian era in AD800, and can be seen depicted in bas reliefs on Angkorian temples such as Angkor Wat and the Bayon.
Chhoy Vira says fate played a role in introducting him to the game, after his family moved from Kampong Cham to Phnom Penh. “In 1994, when I was 14 years old, destiny sent me to meet my master, Ponlok,” he recalled. “We shared the same interests, and he accepted me to be his student.
“And one year later, we started together the mission to find chess players all across Phnom Penh,” he stated, adding that Ponlok had learnt the game from Master Lak, who had been awarded a golden medal in Cambodian chess during the Sangkum Reastr Niyum regime (1954-70) of Norodom Sihanouk. By 1999, Chhoy’s reputation as the man to beat in Cambodian chess was cemented.
Tragically, Master Ponlok died in a road accident in 2006. “I will always respect him, even if I beat him many times, because without him I could not have reached the success I have,” Chhoy Vira noted, with a smile.
Chhoy compares strategies in the game of chess to strategies of war battles. “When I play, I always consider myself as top leader in the Kingdom,” he reveals. “Sometimes, I have to put the fishes [pawns] in danger as we let some infantry die. And then, we try our best to destroy the military camp before killing the rival king.”
He also showed his admiration for the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen. “Like playing chess, [Hun Sen] led the country with a view to the future. He knew well the positive and negative steps to take in advance. So that’s why Cambodia has developed a lot under his direction.”
The Cambodian champion can play play other forms of chess, including Russian and international, but said he doesn’t like playing under Chinese rules. After clinching the title in 2008, Chhoy Vira formed a strong relationship with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Cambodian Chess Federation. Vat Chamroeun, recently appointed general secretary of the NOC, wanted Chhoy Vira to form an association, with the objective of increasing the number of competitions of Cambodian chess, and helping locals reach international level.
“I really want the people of the world know the strength of Cambodian chess players, alongside ones from India, Bulgaria and Russia,” Chhoy Vira said. “I’m not saying I’m the best one, but I won’t hesitate if someone presents me with the opportunity to play against other champions in the world.”
Suy Sopheap is a friend of Chhoy Vira from the local chess circuit.
“I believe that Vira could gain victory in international tournaments,” Suy Sopheap said. “The way that he plays is so complicated, I don’t understand his methods. It’s difficult to find his weakness.”
Sea Lareach, owner of the chess coffee shop, appreciates the talents of Chhoy Vira. “When he plays, many people come to my shop,” he said.
However, playing chess is not a profession for Chhoy Vira, and following his graduation with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2006, he started work with his brother. Chhoy Vira remains happy to teach others who want to learn from him, suggesting that retention of knowledge also depends on the fate of the person.

National swimming legend Hem Thon stays poolside
EM Thon shows a determination that goes beyond his 67 years. The national swimming legend began his career in sports way back in the Sangkum Reastr Niyum regime of Norodom Sihanouk, and he gives a fascinating insight into his past.
Raised in Koh Dach commune, Kandal Province, Hem Thon was initially interested in football. He played for royal team, Cercle Royale Khmere, alongside the top national goalkeeper of the time, Lim Sak, who remained one of his closest friends.
It was not by accident that Hem Thon found himself in the swimming pool near Wat Phnom, at a site now occupied by the American Embassy. “Two reasons pushed me to join” the swimming team, he recalls. “Firstly, because the encouragement of older athletes, and secondly, I was alone because most of my football teammates went to China.”
The top national swimmer
Hem Thon quickly rose up the ranks, making his national championship debut in late 1960, where he finished in second place. From then on out, he dominated the domestic scene for a decade, taking nothing but gold.
Hem Thon says he lost count of the amount of medals he received from national swimming events, but remembers grabbing three bronze medals at his first international event, the 1963 Ganefo Games in Indonesia.
During the third SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1965, his medal haul included two silvers and three bronzes.
However, his happiest moment came in an international competition in Singapore in 1965, where he won gold in the 100m freestyle, beating swimmers from four other nations in the region. In total, Hem Thon won 12 medals at international competitions during his career.
His career as an athlete came to an end in 1971, with age becoming a factor and the political situation in the Kingdom rapidly becoming unsafe. During the Khmer Rouge regime, he relocated to Pursat province, where, tragically, five of his children died.
Despite ceasing to compete in the pool, Hem Thon was adamant about playing an active role in the development of sport in his home country. “I decided to return to the sports sector after the war because I don’t want to lose what I had done before,” he said.
In 1983, Hem Thon and a few friends started the Federation of Amateur Swimming of Cambodia, an internationally recognised organisation that changed to the Khmer Amateur Swimming Federation in 1996. Hem Thon was instated as General Secretary and head coach in 1994, as well as serving as a government official in charge of sport education until his retirement in 2000.
The national hero has stated that his mission will not be complete unless young Cambodian swimmers win medals from international competitions.
His talent in the water seems to have been passed down to his three sons, one daughter and one granddaughter. However, only his youngest son, 19-year-old Hem Thon Ponloeu, and his granddaughter, 15-year-old Hem Thon Vitiny, still compete in swimming, both featuring on the national team.
Much work still to be done
According to Hem Thon, the Cambodian swimmers of today are producing better performances than in his generation, but have a long way to go before they can begin to hold their own in regional competitions.
“While we are just starting the first step, other countries have reached the tenth step already,” he opined.
“It is difficult to say that [the young Cambodian athletes] will win medals from the upcoming SEA Games in Laos because, honestly, we are not well-prepared yet,” admitted Hem Thon. “But I hope in 2011 or 2013, they will realise our dream.”
Indeed, things look promising, with his granddaughter Vitiny making the last eight at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand, setting a new national record in the process.
Despite his age, Hem Thon keeps remarkably busy. In the morning, he is often at Apsara TV, where he is one of a panel of experts on the sports news. Recently he was elected as a member of National Olympic Committee, a job he describes as complicated. Evenings nearly always see him training his students of the national team. The swimming federation has yet to find an office, so Hem Thon always takes related work to do at home.
“Most of the work I do voluntarily, and sometimes I spend my own cash,” he said. “If I didn’t think of the national interest, I may have left [the sport] a long time ago.”

Thailand thrash Cambodia U16s 8-0 in AFC qualifier Friday
LAST week, Cambodian Football Federation spokesman May Tola had predicted the U16 national team would perform admirably in their AFC Championship 2010 qualifiers in Thailand, inspired by the feats of East Timor, who had qualified for the finals for the first time in their history.
However, the Cambodian youngsters were well and truly routed by host nation Thailand, who smashed in an awesome eight with no reply Friday. A hat trick within seven minutes by Prakasit Khamkhong contributed to Thailand’s first-half tally of five.
Three Cambodian defenders were brought on midway through the second half in an attempt to stem the flow of relentless Thai attacks, but they couldn’t prevent Prakasit’s cropping up near the end to grab his fourth, and his team’s eighth.
Cambodia sit bottom of their group, which Thailand top, while North Korea take second place after beating Vietnam 2-1 Friday. Myanmar stunned South Korea with a 1-1 draw.
Nimol, a Cambodian student living in Bangkok, watched the match live at Bangkok’s Royal Thai Army Stadium. He said the Cambodian boys had little to blame themselves for, with the Thai squad holding a significant size advantage.
Nimol also noted that Cambodian goalkeeper Prak Monyphirun was kept extremely busy, with the Thais dominating the possession throughout the game.

Under the leadership of Japanese coach Teshima Atsushi, the Cambodian youngsters will face Thailand, North Korea, South Korea, Vietnam and Myanmar in their intimidating Group G. On the opening day Friday, Cambodia play hosts Thailand before coming up against South Korea two days later. Then, on October 14, 16 and 19, they face Vietnam, Myanmar and North Korea respectively.
The top three teams in the group will qualify for the 2010 finals.
Timor Leste made history Monday, booking their first-ever AFC U16 Championship finals berth with a 3-0 win over Guam October 1 to finish second in group F behind China. Hong Kong grabbed the third qualifying spot ahead of Singapore, Macau and Guam.
With Timor Leste’s success story, Cambodian Football Federation spokesman May Tola showed optimism for the tournament, even with formidable opponents in their group. “They [Cambodian U16 team] trained regularly during the last three weeks,” he said. “They are performing well.
